30-Second Setup

What matters this week

  • The Federal Reserve is the main event. The FOMC meets Tuesday and Wednesday, with the policy decision at 2:00 PM ET Wednesday and the press conference at 2:30 PM ET.
  • Retail sales arrive Wednesday morning. Consumer spending data lands just hours before the Fed decision.
  • Housing gets a major test Thursday. Housing starts and pending home sales arrive after the Fed, while Lennar reports Wednesday after the close.
  • Earnings are relatively light. PLAY, TCOM and LEN are among the names worth keeping on the radar.
  • Focus: Treasury yields, the Fed's updated projections and whether the market can hold its reaction after Wednesday's announcement.
  • SPCX: There is no newly confirmed investor event on this week's calendar, so watch for fresh company or launch-related headlines.

Market Setup: SPY

SPY finished Friday at $764.19 after rebounding from Thursday's selloff. The larger issue now is whether the market can hold that recovery through a Fed meeting where traders are expecting another possible rate increase.

Friday High / Near-Term Resistance$766.35A move above Friday's high would strengthen the short-term recovery.
Friday Low / Near-Term Support$763.63Losing Friday's low would weaken the rebound and put sellers back in control short term.
Last Week's Low$756.64This remains the larger downside reference if Fed volatility pressures the market.
What Matters MostFed + RatesThe decision, projections and press conference can quickly move Treasury yields and equities.

SPY takeaway: Wednesday's first move may not be the real move. Let price show whether the Fed reaction can actually hold.

QQQ: Tech Faces the Fed

QQQ finished Friday at $714.83, bouncing with the broader market after a difficult week for growth stocks. Tech remains sensitive to Treasury yields, making Wednesday's Fed decision especially important.

Friday High / Near-Term Resistance$717.61Breaking above Friday's high would improve the short-term tech setup.
Friday Low / Near-Term Support$713.69A break below this area would weaken Friday's recovery.
Last Week's Low$706.86This is the larger downside reference if yields pressure growth stocks again.

Key Earnings This Week

It is a lighter earnings week, but there are still a few reports worth watching.

Monday โ€” PLAY / HAIN / RFILDave & Buster's, Hain Celestial and RF Industries are among Monday's reports.
Tuesday โ€” TCOM / FPS / VRATrip.com is the standout, with Forgent Power Solutions and Vera Bradley also on the calendar.
Wednesday โ€” LENLennar is one of the week's most relevant reports. Housing and mortgage rates are already in focus around the Fed decision.
Thursday-Friday โ€” Light ScheduleThe back half of the week is relatively quiet, keeping the market's attention on the Fed and economic data.

Economic & Fed Calendar

The Fed dominates the week, but retail sales and housing data give traders several additional reads on the economy.

Earnings to Watch

LEN โ€” Lennar

Wednesday after the close. Lennar is especially relevant this week because housing is highly sensitive to interest rates. Orders, pricing, incentives and management's outlook should matter more than the headline EPS number alone.

TCOM โ€” Trip.com

Tuesday after the close. Trip.com can provide another read on travel demand and consumer activity in China. Booking trends and guidance will be worth watching.

PLAY โ€” Dave & Buster's

Monday after the close. PLAY is not likely to move the broader market, but it provides another look at discretionary consumer spending and entertainment demand.

Dagger Trading Take

Don't fight the first Fed move.

Wednesday combines retail sales, the Fed decision, updated projections and the press conference. That can create sharp moves in both directions.

The important part is not predicting the announcement. Watch whether SPY and QQQ can hold their initial reaction once Chair Kevin Warsh begins speaking.

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Know the catalyst. Wait for the reaction.
