August 20 Follow-Up

MRNA pulls back sharply after historic rally

  • MRNA closed Thursday at $133.32, down 23.5%, one day after its record-setting surge.
  • Trading volume remained extraordinary at approximately 97.3 million shares versus a 50-day average of 11.2 million.
  • Dow Jones Market Data reported Thursday as Moderna's worst single-day percentage decline on record, immediately following Wednesday's biggest one-day percentage gain on record.
  • The Phase 3 melanoma catalyst has not reversed. The market is now repricing how much of the opportunity should be reflected in MRNA after the historic move.
  • $134.43 is the first reclaim level I'm watching. Above that, $140.55–$141.81 is the more important confirmation zone. If weakness continues, $123.77 is the next downside area, followed by a deeper $105–$107 zone.

What changed Thursday?

MRNA followed Wednesday's historic rally with an equally dramatic reversal. The stock closed at $133.32, down 23.5%, and finished roughly 24.5% below the 52-week high reached the previous day.

The broader market was weak, but Moderna's decline was substantially larger. Volume totaled approximately 97.3 million shares compared with a 50-day average of 11.2 million — nearly nine times normal volume. That shows just how aggressively Wednesday's move was being repriced.

Importantly, the underlying Phase 3 melanoma results did not suddenly turn negative. The clinical catalyst remains intact. The question has shifted from how high the initial breakout could run to what the breakthrough is worth after such an extreme repricing.

Wall Street is repricing the story

Analyst targets are adjusting rapidly. UBS analyst Michael Yee maintained a Neutral rating on Moderna but raised the price target from $50 to $150. The much higher target acknowledges the significance of the Phase 3 results while the unchanged rating reflects caution after the stock's historic move.

The impact also reached beyond Moderna. BioNTech and Novavax rallied sharply Wednesday as investors reassessed the broader cancer-vaccine opportunity, reinforcing how significant the successful late-stage mRNA cancer-vaccine trial was viewed across the sector.

The technical picture has changed

The original Spotlight warned against chasing a 177% one-day move and identified $184.63 as an important pullback area. That level failed, followed by the loss of $163.72. Both now sit well overhead.

With MRNA closing at $133.32, the focus is no longer on extending Wednesday's breakout. I'm watching to see where buyers can establish meaningful support and whether short-term momentum can begin repairing the damage.

What I'm watching next

First Reclaim$134.43Getting back above this 23.6% level would be the first positive step, but by itself would not fully repair the short-term chart.
Stronger Confirmation$140.55–$141.81This overhead cluster is the more important area to reclaim and hold if MRNA is going to build a stronger rebound.
Downside Support$123.77If buyers cannot stabilize the stock and selling pressure continues, this is the next important downside area I'm watching.
Deeper Support$105–$107A deeper support zone to watch only if $123.77 fails. This is an area of interest, not a prediction or price target.

Momentum check

Momentum: Shorter-term momentum has turned bearish following Thursday's selloff, while the higher-timeframe trend remains bullish. This creates a mixed technical picture and makes MRNA's reaction around the key levels especially important.

Dagger Trading Take • August 20

Let price show where buyers are willing to defend

The fundamental cancer-vaccine story remains significant, but the chart has undergone a major reset. $134.43 is the first reclaim level; $140.55–$141.81 would provide stronger confirmation.

If the stock remains weak, I'm watching $123.77 for the next meaningful buyer response rather than assuming the pullback is finished.

Momentum remains the key. Stay sharp.

30-SECOND SUMMARY

What matters most

  • MRNA closed at $174.38, up 177% after Moderna and Merck reported positive Phase 3 results for a personalized mRNA cancer treatment.
  • Trading volume reached 187.3 million shares versus a 50-day average of just 7.3 million.
  • The results mark the first successful late-stage trial of a personalized mRNA cancer therapy.
  • William Blair upgraded Moderna from Market Perform to Outperform following the news.
  • $193.61 is the key upside level I'm watching. A break above it, followed by a strong hold and continued momentum, could open the door for another move higher.

What happened?

Moderna exploded higher Wednesday after the company and Merck announced positive topline results from the Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial.

The study tested Moderna's personalized mRNA cancer treatment, intismeran autogene, in combination with Merck's Keytruda in patients with high-risk melanoma following surgery.

The study met its main goal of extending the time before the cancer returned compared with Keytruda alone. It also met a secondary goal of preventing the disease from spreading to other organs.

The market reaction was massive. MRNA finished Wednesday at $174.38, up 177%, with approximately 187.3 million shares traded — more than 25 times its 50-day average. The move also pushed Moderna to a new 52-week high.

After-hours update: MRNA continued higher after the regular session, reaching approximately $194.88 and pushing above the key $193.61 resistance area. The move is encouraging, but after-hours trading is not confirmation by itself. The next question is whether MRNA can hold above that area when regular trading resumes.

Why MRNA is interesting now

The Phase 3 success could represent an important turning point for Moderna as the company looks for new sources of growth beyond its COVID-19 vaccine business.

Earlier trial results showed that intismeran combined with Keytruda reduced the risk of melanoma recurrence or death by 49% compared with Keytruda alone. The successful Phase 3 study now provides stronger validation of the personalized mRNA approach.

Moderna hopes the melanoma treatment could potentially reach the market in 2027, although regulatory approval is still required. More detailed Phase 3 results are expected to be presented later this year.

The bigger opportunity

Melanoma may only be the beginning. Moderna and Merck's INTerpath clinical program includes nine Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials covering melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

Earlier-stage studies are also examining the technology in lung, gastric and pancreatic cancers.

Success in melanoma doesn't guarantee success in other cancers, but the result gives the technology important late-stage validation while a broader cancer pipeline is already under development.

Wall Street reaction

William Blair analyst Myles Minter upgraded Moderna from Market Perform to Outperform following the Phase 3 announcement.

Merck also gained approximately 13% Wednesday, showing that investors viewed the results as meaningful for both companies.

Two areas I'm watching

Near-Term Level $184.63 If MRNA pulls back, the reaction around this area could help show whether buyers are still willing to step in or whether the stock needs a larger reset.
Key Resistance $193.61 This is the most important level I'm watching for additional upside. A break above it, followed by a strong hold and continued momentum, could open the door for another move higher.

What would improve the chart?

MRNA has already pushed above $193.61 in after-hours trading, reaching approximately $194.88. Now I'd like to see whether it can hold that area as support and continue showing strong momentum and volume during regular trading.

If that happens, the stock could have room for another leg higher toward the next major resistance area from its longer-term decline.

What would concern me?

After a 177% one-day move, MRNA is extremely extended and volatility is likely to remain high.

If $193.61 continues to act as strong resistance and momentum begins to weaken, a significant retracement would not be surprising. In that scenario, $184.63 becomes an important area to watch for buyers.
